Football’s finest

They don’t train and they drink a bottle of port at half time. Social? Yeah, I guess.

The Queens Park AFC Div2 side was reformed in 2007. A squad of players largely new to football, it started its first season slowly but improved remarkably as the season wore on. Led by Dutch football proponent Johnny the Wad, inspirational captain Glenn Rat Williams and respected club president Lindsay Barney Barnett, the team ended its first season with a win, and started strongly in 2008.

A bolstered management team, a slew of new players, and a renewed and justified self confidence has set this strongly social side up for a fantastic new season. To a man, the often ageing and arthritic lads are keen to make sure the Ascot Hotel is a place of celebration this season – or, at least, good place to keep talking the same big game they do after every match.

So, if you can’t be where the boys are this season, make sure you visit this site to see how they’re going in Soccer Southland’s hard-fought and hotly contested Division Two social league. They might just surprise you.
